Sweet-sour comedy on Italy's 1960's rage to get rich as fast as possible. The lead actor (Alberto Sordi) plays the part of a psuedo businessman who to satisfy his wife's craving for luxury and a "respectable life" becomes heavily indebted. In desperation he agrees to sell a precious part of his body for a large sum of money. But just before the crucial operation, he panics.

The whole film is a grotesque comedy on Italy's obsession of those times to be "respectable" i.e. be rich,show it,and give the impression of being part of the respectable upper-middle class even though "secretly" you are just another of those "noveau riches". Giovanni vit largement au-dessus de ses moyens pour subvenir aux besoins matériels de sa femme, qui en retour satisfait pleinement ses pulsions sexuelles. Au bord de la faillite et terriblement angoissé à l'idée de perdre sa femme, il songe au suicide quand une petite annonce lui redonne espoir: un homme riche offre une important somme d'argent à quiconque lui fera don d'un de ses yeux.

Giovanni Alberti (Alberto Sordi), imprenditore edile senza fortuna, è costretto a vivere al di sopra delle proprie possibilità negli anni del boom economico per compiacere la moglie (Gianna Maria Canale). Nel tentativo di risollevare le proprie sorti e liberarsi dei debiti, dopo aver chiesto aiuto a tutti i suoi conoscenti decide infine di mettere in vendita un occhio.
