Grim from the get-go, this entry in the Italian giallo genre derives its suspense by putting small children in peril. If you can get over that somewhat nauseating premise, Aldo Lado's murder mystery will keep you on the edge of your seat as Franco, the grieving father, searches the picturesque city of Venice for clues as to what happened to his innocent daughter. George Lazenby does a fine job expressing shock and bewilderment, and, as he unravels a conspiracy, violent anger in the role of the sad dad. The story may be more convoluted than necessary, but Lado keeps things interesting by giving each of the secondary characters some nutty quirk to make them memorable. The lush on-a-budget photography, the detailed settings, and Ennio Morricone's indispensable score help keep you riveted.
