Trop peu connu, Who’s that knocking at my door, premier film de Martin Scorsese, est pourtant l’un de ses films les plus audacieux et inventifs. Ce premier film, dont le tournage fut long et chaotique, comporte déjà les principaux éléments-clé de l’œuvre de Scorsese : Little Italy, le tiraillement entre le besoin de liberté, d’émancipation et des carcans sociaux et culturels rigides,… – le film suit J. R., jeune homme d’origine italienne, à travers deux lignes narratives parallèles : ses amitiés machos et très identitaires, et, semble-t-il en flash-back, son histoire d’amour brève avec une jeune femme, où il commence à se remettre en question mais qu’il détruira lorsqu’elle lui avouera avoir été violée quelques années auparavant.
